Become a student in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is part of the Bologna Process. This means that its higher education system is divided into three levels, called levels. These levels are:

First level: This is the undergraduate level. Bachelor's degrees typically take three to four years to complete. Specialized subjects, such as medicine and engineering, will normally take the extra year.

Second level: This is the postgraduate level. Master's degrees typically take two years to complete.

Third level: This is the doctoral level. Doctorates typically take three to five years to complete. Some students choose to teach while they do research, so this brings doctoral qualifications up to the five-year mark.

Bulgaria is part of Erasmus. This means that you can do part of your qualification, or even an internship, outside of Bulgaria. You can even get a scholarship while studying or working.

Many undergraduate degrees are taught in Bulgarian, and many postgraduate degrees are available in both English and Bulgarian. That said, Bulgarian and English are used at all three levels of higher education. If you are worried that your English is a bit rusty, some schools also offer courses taught in German and French.

Tuition fees in Bulgaria can vary a lot. It depends on what you are studying and where. Tuition fees in Bulgaria are normally paid in euros in two installments: one before the academic year starts and the other in the middle of the year.
